Civic Society Awards
|
The Society has built up a portfolio of annual Awards over recent years. Their purpose is to recognise and celebrate particular achievements in the local community and to associate the Society with the positive values that these aspects of good citizenship represent, thereby raising our public profile as an organisation that 'cares' and 'involves itself'. Our Art Award and our English Award are directed at local schoolchildren and are collaborative undertakings with the teaching staff of those schools. Both were launched in 2004. Society members - and, in the case of the Art Award, a local artistic expert - work closely with the teaching staff to set the 'themes' for each year's Awards and to select the 'winner(s)'. Prizes are presented by the Society during normal 'School Award Services'. The prizes are donated by local businesses. In this respect, the two Awards are 'sponsored'. Our Building Award was launched in 2007. Candidate buildings are identified by Society members. They also select the 'winner(s)'. The prizes are certificates - which are created and presented by the Society. There is a defined set of qualifying criteria. All three Awards are highly coveted in the local community. Each Award has its own zenith at a point in the year. Helpfully, all are different. The Art Award is in April. The Building Award is in September. The English Award is in October (although it was originally in January). |
