PRESS RELEASE – 17 July 2006

Corsham Prepares to Celebrate its Heritage

Corsham Civic Society plans to mark the town’s fourth participation in the nation’s annual celebration of cultural and architectural heritage with something for everyone.  As ever, the purpose of Heritage Open Days is to open buildings and make presentations to the public under circumstances which are not normally available to them, and to do so without any charge whatsoever.

The Society takes the role of Programme Co-ordinator.  It selects the ‘attractions’ to be included and organises all aspects of the mini-festival, which runs from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th September, inclusive.  The Society’s Vice Chairman, Peter Tapscott, is this year’s leader of the team undertaking the project.

Peter told us, “Each year we try to include something different.  This year we have retained some established favourites but have mixed them with new items which we can already see will have an appeal to some of our more recent recruits, as well as to many of the newcomers to the area, in general.  One in particular, tours of the Rudloe Stoneworks, at Leafield, where high-quality fireplaces are designed and manufactured from local materials, has also attracted national interest.  As a direct consequence of our efforts, the business will be featured in the September edition of the BBC magazine Homes and Antiques.”

Times and arrangements for the various items which appear on the HODs 2006 Programme for Corsham can be found on the Society’s website www.corsham-civic-society.co.uk .  Mr Tapscott assures us that other forms of promotion for the festival will additionally be used, including traditional posters, flyers and news articles – all nearer the time.

The Corsham Civic Society is also pleased to announce the availability of a pocket-sized reprint of its highly-successful book The Archive Photograph Series – Corsham.  First published in 1997, the book has been in great demand in recent years but has been in increasingly short supply.  Visitors to the Corsham Tourist Information and Heritage Centre, for example, have had their enquiries met with “We’re sorry, the book is out-of-stock.”  Now a new version has been published.  It contains all the previous photographs and text, but is presented in a reduced format.  It is called Pocket Images – Corsham and is published under the Nonsuch Publishing Limited brand, as part of a series.

The book costs £5.99 and is available from Corsham Bookshop at 16 High Street.
