Corsham Enjoys its Heritage
Corsham’s Civic Society declared itself well-pleased with the response it had generated to the town’s participation in last weekend’s annual celebration of England’s cultural and architectural heritage, Heritage Open Days. The weather was glorious and locals and visitors alike turned out in their droves. Attendances were generally up on previous years.
Peter Tapscott, who helped run the mini-festival, reported that visitor records reveal that people from as far away as the USA and Canada dropped in on Corsham to join in the fun.
He said: “The two talks given in St Bartholomew’s Church were exceptional. Both Celia James and Ron Smith had researched their subjects really well and their delivery was excellent.”
Mr Tapscott added: “As expected, the tours of Rudloe Stoneworks proved highly popular. The company entered fully into the spirit of the event, providing refreshments and even sponsorship of a raffle to all those who took part.”
“Martin Yallop’s guided tours of Corsham Town Centre were guaranteed winners, and so they proved to be.”
“Sunday was an extremely busy day in Corsham. Not only were there the final items on the HODs 2006 Programme to be squeezed in, but there was a sponsored walk in aid of those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease taking place in Corsham Park and there was a concert by the Corsham Town Band in the grounds of the Court. All this, and the normal influx of visitors seeking Sunday Lunch at one of our pub restaurants. The place was really buzzing,” he said.
Mr Tapscott concluded: “My abiding memories of Corsham’s participation in HODs 2006 will be firstly, having all those memories of the times of Nebuchadnezzar, Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego, as told in the Book of Daniel, rekindled by Celia James when she described and brought to life the only window at St Bart’s devoted to the contents of the Old Testament – and, secondly, the look on a certain gentleman’s face when he was presented with the 1st prize in the Friday raffle at Rudloe Stoneworks. It was a full-size stone replica of a chicken, and he’d walked to the factory!”
