PRESS RELEASE – 6 FEBRUARY 2007

 Town’s Society Looks Both Ways

The people of Corsham got 2007 underway with a well-attended wine tasting Open Meeting at the Community Centre during the last week in January.  Organised by the Corsham Civic Society, the event allowed Peter Henney, the manager of Chippenham’s Berkmann Wine Cellars, to provide expert guidance on how to choose wine for every occasion.  Peter Tapscott, Vice Chairman of the Society, states “Members will now imbibe with a much more educated palate – and an improved knowledge of what to look for on the shelves.”

Mr. Tapscott adds “The February meeting of our thriving group is something of a coup.  Michael Burton (former Head of the School of Architecture, Bristol University) is to give a talk on the development of the Civic Trust and its achievements over the 50 years since its creation in 1956.  Michael played a major role in the Trust’s formation.”

“He is now one of Corsham’s notable residents.  Michael knows at first hand the challenges which have faced the Civic Trust over recent years and those which it must overcome if it is to continue to be relevant in the future.  He has a wealth of experience upon which to base his presentation and is an excellent speaker.  Those attending the meeting are assured of an insight into just what it takes to make things happen at a national level.  Truly, a campaign around every corner.”

Peter describes this as a not-to-be-missed occasion.  It takes place on Friday evening, 23rd February, starting at 8 o’clock.  The venue is St Aldhelm’s Church Hall, Pickwick Road, Corsham.  There is plenty of parking space available in the nearby Newlands Road Car Park.  A trip to Corsham is always well worthwhile these days, he says.

Corsham’s Civic Society’s Programme of Events for 2007 contains presentations on a wide range of subjects, together with the type of purely sociable gatherings that have marked the growing popularity of this group over recent years.  Some of the topics being covered this year are truly novel – not ones to be found on the more-generally encountered programmes for such organisations.  There is an event in every month – two in August.

You do not need to be a member to attend these meetings.  However, as the Society is keen to point out, it is always on the lookout for new members.  They are sure of a warm welcome.

Copies of the 2007 Programme are available at the Corsham Tourist Information & Heritage Centre.  Additionally, the Programme can always be found on the Society’s informative website, www.corsham-civic-society.co.uk.
